Offshore

As the world accelerates the transition to renewable energy, offshore wind farms are being developed on an unprecedented scale. The offshore industry plays a vital role in this transition and depends on reliable propulsion and power solutions to keep operations running.

Volvo Penta delivers optimised propulsion and power solutions for a wide range of mission-specific offshore vessels, including crew transfer vessels, platform supply vessels, construction vessels, jack-up vessels, cable-laying vessels, dive support vessels, and heavy-lift crane vessels.

Every solution is engineered to maximise uptime, reliability, and operational efficiency, enabling offshore operations to be carried out safely, efficiently, and sustainably, even in the most demanding environments.

Below are some of the offshore segments we serve.

CTV (Crew Tender Vessels)

Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) are purpose-built to transport personnel safely and efficiently to offshore wind farms and other offshore installations.

Volvo Penta engines, advanced joystick steering, and the Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system provide CTV operators with the power, precision, and manoeuvrability required to ensure safe and reliable crew transfers at sea.

Together with Danfoss, we are helping to develop more sustainable transport solutions for the offshore wind industry. By integrating hybrid-electric IPS propulsion systems, we offer a fully integrated marine solution designed to support the offshore sector in its transition towards cleaner, more efficient operations.

Industrial applications

During the construction of offshore wind farms, extensive work is carried out on the seabed to install the infrastructure required to transport generated electricity to the mainland.

Hydraulic pump sets, installed on board vessels or offshore platforms, play a vital role in these operations. They are used for applications such as water transfer, dredging, dewatering, drilling, and pile driving.

These demanding operations require a continuous and reliable power supply to perform heavy-duty tasks efficiently.

Volvo Penta engines are specifically designed to deliver the continuous high power output and reliability required for these challenging industrial applications.

Dredging

The dredging industry is a highly specialised and essential part of the maritime sector, with the Netherlands and Belgium recognised as global leaders in the field. In simple terms, dredging involves removing and relocating sediment (such as sand, clay, and silt) from the seabed to another location.

Volvo Penta engines are suitable for a wide range of dredging applications, including trailing suction hopper dredgers, cutter suction dredgers, cutter head dredgers, hydraulic excavators on pontoons, and hopper barges.

Volvo Penta offers powerful and reliable engine solutions designed to meet the demanding requirements of the dredging industry. Curious about the available options? Click below to explore the engine range and available power ratings.
